The Silent Obsession

Pierrot is the deuteragonist of The Freak Circus and the character the story is built around. He does not speak in the ordinary sense, yet the game gives him some of its longest and most articulate monologues. He is gentle in manner, devoted past the point of health, and the only member of the troupe who consistently tries to keep the protagonist out of the others' reach — which is not at all the same thing as keeping them safe.

Appearance

White mid-length hair and a white mask with black vertical slits through upturned eyeholes; the right slit ends in a black tear. The mask is not fixed — his mouth reshapes into frowns and sharp-toothed grins, and his golden pupils change between pinpricks, slits, rings and hearts. He wears a red and black jester's cap with three belled liripipes, a red motley coat with gold accents over a black tunic, black clawed gloves and knee-high pointed boots.

Personality

Polite, soft-spoken and completely devoted to whoever he has fixed on. Underneath that, obsessive in ways the game does not romanticise: he follows the protagonist, watches them sleep, and when told he will not be seen the next day he drugs and takes them. He is also the one who steps between you and the rest of the troupe. Both things are true at once, and the story is largely about that.

From the developer's AMAs

The following comes from the developer's Tumblr Q&As, not from the game. It is official, but you will not see it on screen.

  • Creator confirmedHe cooks and bakes, and it is his hobby as much as a chore. He is the best cook of the five, so he usually cooks for the circus; the Ticket Taker or the Jester covers when he cannot.
  • Creator confirmedHis favourite food, and his favourite thing to cook, is brigadeiro. He also likes coxinha. There is no food he dislikes.
  • Creator confirmedHis favourite colour is yellow, his favourite season is spring, and his representative flowers are the yellow ipê and the yellow begonia.
  • Creator confirmedHe celebrates his own birthday by baking a cake tuned to everyone's tastes so the troupe can share it.
  • Creator confirmedIf he could pick a profession, he would be a baker. If he could be an animal, a dog.
